Bold Kaizen Approach at COSC Means Lean Six Sigma is Not Far Behind
Pinal County, AZ-- What happens behind closed doors is usually nobody’s business. Not when it’s a Kaizen! A Kaizen is a highly focused time-limited team that comes together to achieve rapid improvement for a highlighted problem. At the office of the Clerk of the Superior Court (COSC), Chad A. Roche began the first of many planned Kaizen events or “bursts.” A short film about this Kaizen can be seen by going to the Clerk’s Facebook page at Pinal County Clerk of the Superior Court and clicking on the Kaizen link. It is also available on YouTube here: http://youtu.be/MHpyws9rfXw
Clerk Roche explained, “Kaizen literally means ‘continuous improvement’ and it involves a hand-picked team getting together for a concentrated burst of focused attention on an identified problem. This initial Kaizen was focused on mapping COSC processes, and even though it is just a 5 day event, the deliverables have already exceeded our expectations.”
Typically, a Kaizen is one of the many tools of Lean Six Sigma (LSS). Clerk Roche is committed to bringing this well-respected private-sector approach to trimming waste and eliminating error to the COSC. Roche commented, “I saw firsthand how LSS transformed several areas when I business development manager at Ecolab, and I know it will work here in my office too.” Roche, a veteran of the USN, states that LSS is now regularly implemented in both the US Department of Defense as well as within the Department of the Navy.
The implementation of LSS requires absolute involvement and commitment by top management, and that is why Clerk Roche is sending all of his core management team to get their “Green Belt” from Villanova University. Dyane Ceal, Director of Court Operations concurs. “Lean Six is a bottom-up style of management that is not common in the government sector. It’s a cultural shift to be sure; Lean Six allows every employee to feel committed being good trustees of taxpayers’ money.”
Clerk Roche and Director Ceal will be guests on the Bryan Martyn Show on KQCK Live Thursday evening, September 1 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The Clerk welcomes any questions about his vision for the COSC. The call in number for the studio is 602-910-5778.
